Ms. Olivia Thomas

Subject: English/Math

Email:  thomas@abiquaschool.org

To be honest, I didn’t want to become a teacher. I originally wanted to be a newspaper editor or cartoonist (the only problem being that I can’t draw). However, when I was fourteen and living in Romania with my family, I began teaching English weekly in a small Gypsy colony and found that I loved teaching. I continued teaching English—both in the colony and in a local kindergarten—and expanded my horizon to include teaching crafts and other subjects for programs in Romania, Mozambique, and Albania, as well as locally.

Here's some things about me you might want to know:

I Love Being A Teacher Because:
.I get to work with kids. There are few things more satisfying than getting to know a passel of young people who have new and unique ideas, curiosity, and energy.

I Was Born In:
Portland, OR.

I Went To College At:
Western Oregon University. Go Wolves!

My Favorite Color Is:
Blue

My Favorite Vacation Spot Is:
too many to count! I particularly enjoyed Estonia, where my mother’s family is from. Locally, I am keen on camping and beach-walking.

My Favorite Food Is:
anything Mexican or Italian. Anything non-lima bean.

My Family Is:
three sisters, one soon-to-be brother-in-law, my lovely parents, and a solicitous Jack Russell terrier named Fritz.

My Favorite Unit To Teach Is:
poetry. I love poetry and, even more so, I love watching young people begin to develop an appreciation for poetry and spread their own poetic wings.

My Educational Philosophy Is:
Learning needs to be a life-long habit. As teachers, our primary concern is to guide students in their discovery of how to learn. Meanwhile, we must continually expand our own pool of knowledge, modeling this life of learning.
