I grew up in a small town called Palo Cedro, nestled in the foothills of northern California. As a child I devoted many hours to reading, decorating my dollhouse, exploring the creek in the backyard, and raising show chickens. As an honor student in high school, I found time for softball, cheerleading, and working as a clerk at the local grocery store. I said goodbye to California when I decided to attend the University of Oregon and major in psychology. During my studies in psychology, I was most interested in child development and social behaviors. After completing my degree, I lived in Brussels, Belgium and traveled throughout Europe for a year. When I returned to Oregon, I took my first significant step in childhood education as a director for a before/after school program. Next, I began working for the Salem Keizer School District as an assistant in a special needs classroom. I decided to pursue a teaching career, and chose Willamette University’s Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program as my guide. Soon after completing my masters degree, I started teaching at Abiqua in one of the 3rd/4th grade classrooms. I feel so fortunate to be a part of a school community that truly values the transformative power of education. For me teaching is more than a career; it’s a calling.
