Ms. Joene Runkle

Subject: Grades 1 and 2

Position: Primary Teacher
Email:  runkle@abiquaschool.org

My first teaching job was in third grade in 1973. While my children were young, I left the classroom and became a piano teacher for 30 kids, ages 7-18. I would leave when my husband got home and go to the homes of my students for lessons. I was called "Travelin Tunes." When my youngest child, Kate, entered grade school, I went back into the classroom, where I've been ever since.

Here's some things about me you might want to know:

I have a number of favorite vacation spots. Detroit Lake is a favorite during the summer. We also love the Alsea River area, where my family has the ability to get together often and play. My Family Is:
My husband Monte and I have three grown children, out of college and married with five very special granddaughters. Caralie, Bryan and their daughters Myah and Khloey, live in Hillsboro. Jason, Becca and their children, Lilly and Hunter, live in Jefferson. And my daughter Kate and husband Mike live in Veneta with their son, Jace. Kate is a Special Ed. teacher in the Eugene school district.

My Favorite Unit To Teach Is:
I'm really enjoying teaching the theme units. It's wonderful to get together with my partner, Mrs. Christal Shafer, and brainstorm which direction to take the kids in theme study. We alternate years with study of our community and animal habitats. It's energizing to incorporate the state standards with our theme.

I Love Abiqua School Because:
The families are committed to education. I like being part of a small environment, where you can watch your special little ones grow up, move out of your classroom and onto the older grades. They always come back to check up on me and I'm forever watching them.

My Educational Philosophy Is:
Learning should be one of the most joyful and successful of human undertakings. I strive to live by the motto, "Think deeply, speak gently, love much, laugh a lot, work hard, give freely and be kind. My goal is to create an active, thoughtful classroom of children who care for one another. Cooperation will be the rule rather than competition.
