Ms. Janette Phelan

Subject: Kindergarten Teacher

Email:  phelan@abiquaschool.org

I have an opportunity every day to see a child's face light up as they explore, experiment or master a new idea or skill.

Here's some things about me you might want to know:

I Love Being A Teacher Because:
I love the look of wonder that spreads across their faces as I present a new concept or different point of view. I love the mind set, the excitement, the curiosity, the determination, and the empathy that I witness every day - and, of course, I love receiving about a million hugs every year.

I Have Taught 16 years, 14 at Abiqua Years

I Was Born In:
California.

I Grew Up In
Southern California until I was ten, and then we moved to Grass Valley in Northern California.

I Went To College At:
Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.

My Favorite Color Is:
Purple

My Favorite Vacation Spot Is:
Maui, Hawaii

My Favorite Food Is:
chocolate, any way and any place!

My Family Is:
My daughter, Jenn and my son, Dustin

The Pets I Have Are:
a cat named Monet and a dog named Jaz

My Favorite Unit To Teach Is:
spiders and insects. Children are fascinated by "bugs" and "crawly things." There are so many concepts around this one topic; habitats, life cycles, the food chain, compare and contrast and a delightful mystery of the unknown.

I Love Abiqua School Because:
I love being a teacher at Abiqua because I have an opportunity to teach children the way I believe is most effective; a developmentally appropriate environment and support in educating children using the multiple intelligents. I feel honored to work with some of the best teachers our profession has to offer. I know my students are so successful because of our small class size.

My Educational Philosophy Is:
centered upon what is developmentally appropriate for children. I believe it is crucial that educators strive for curriculum that is geared toward the inquisitive mind and an environment where children are treated with respect, and they feel safe and secure. Each child must be viewed individually and provided with the best opportunities to experience success throughout their educational careers.
